Road trip in Umbria, exploring Gubbio, a beautiful medival city in the land of wine, cheeses and olive oil!

The Italian city of Gubbio, is considered one of the most beautiful medival cities in the world! Getting up to Duomo Cathedral and Palazzo Ducale is quite a workout, but a pleasant one, because the narrow stone streets are full of little stores to stop and visit! However, for those super lazy, there are elevators that take you all the way to the top, practically inside the Cathedral! ;)

Umbria, an italian region of wine, cheese, olive oil and beautiful medival settlements, like Todi!

Exploring Umbria, a beautiful region right in the heart of Italy, it's world famous for wines, cheeses and olive oil! Am I making you hungry already?! ;)   Well, Umbria can completely satisfy all your senses.  Travelling through green hills filled with wineries, patchworks of farm fields and pastures with farm animals, will take you back in time and place, where the food was real and genuine.  Make sure to try the 'pecorino cheese' and 'porchetta'. The medieval settlements, like the little town of Todi, where beautiful churches meet modern artisans, will let you savour, on the other hand, plenty of culture and history!

Make sure to visit the Temple of Santa Maria della Consolazione, found just outside the city's walls and enjoy the breath-taking views!  This internationally acclaimed rinascence structure, took almost a century to built 1508-1606, at first it may seam some-what familiar, as it curiously reseambles the Saint Peter's in Rome, build in the same greek-cross pattern!  The interior, on the other hand is quite simple, but incredibly majestic, be a judge for yourself and let me know!

The Temple of San Fortunato was visited by Papa Innocenzo III already in 1198, but in 1292 the structure started its re-modelling works from original Romantic style into Gothic, that took over 130 years and by 1436 only were partially completed!

Santa Maria Assunta is situated in Piazza del Popolo di Todi (defined as one of the most beautiful Piazzas in Italy).  The Cathedral was build in XI century on old Church ruins, then it was again transformed in XIII-XV centuries and modified several times!  Its frontal facade is caracterized by a long staircase and three portals with three rose windows (round colorful windows, the middle one is also the biggest and dates back to 1520).  This round colorful window looks beautiful from inside with a giant XVI century fresco of 'Universal Judgement' by Ferraù of Faenza surrounding it and making the Cathedral truly special!

Under the Tuscan Sun: Day 2 - Pienza and Bagno Vignoni!

On the second day of our trip, right after a breakfast with warm nutella croissant and cappuccino,we went for a city stroll and some souvenir shopping!  Pienza is big on artisan products like natural creams and soaps www.botteghe-aperte.com and body care, as well as beautiful artisan ceramics (Il Salotto is a great store to visit on Corso Il Rossellino, 25 in Pienza)!

In the afternoon, I wanted to go to HOT SPRINGS in Bagno Vignoni; a world-famous, ancient Roman baths!  The place was only few kilometers away from Pienza and I had heard that it was fantastic!

We had lunch in the centre of Bagno Vignoni and went on to visit the central pool in Piazza delle Sorgenti, a place where once Sant Catherine and antique Romans bathed!  Unexpectantly, while taking a walk, about 200 meters from the central city Piazza, we accidentally stumbled upon something incredible and almost surreal, streams of hot water rushing through the ancient ruins and down a magnificent hill!!  People were gathered there to enjoy the sunshine, while bathing their feet in the warm thermal water and breething in the landscape!!  The air was almost magical, calm and filled you with happiness!!

In the evening, we went to the SPA in ‘Albergo le Terme’ www.albergoleterme.it open late until mid-night!! It was a fun day of discovery and relaxation!

A Weekend Under the Tuscan Sun! Day 1: Montepulciano and Pienza!

When is the best time to leave for a week-end in Tuscany?!! Always!! The world-famous italian region has beautiful LANDSCAPES, natural HOT SPRINGS, historical ARCHITECTURE and great FOOD, which make it a great trip destination any time of the year!
This region is best to be explored by car, so here is the road-trip I took with my boyfriend, in order to scoop out all the top places for you all to visit!  Hope you will enjoy it!

Our first stop was Montepulciano, the Red Wine Paradise (make sure you try a red wine from Montepulciano in one of your stops, I promise, you will not be disappointed and take a bottle home)!  This small little town on a hill, not sure if one can even call it a town, or simply a medieval settlement around a mega cathedral (a distinctive structure that you can see for kilometers in the distance) with a breath-taking view has established quite a world fame for itself!   The place is beautiful, very romantic and quite a powerful landmark in Tuscany.

By the afternoon, we got to Pienza, another medieval settlement established by the Pope Enea Silvio Piccolomini (Pope Humanist Pio II), who in just 3 years, 1459-1464, build a majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the city around it, named ‘Pientia’.
Situated on a hill, overlooking 'La Valle D'Orcia' (patrimony of UNESCO and now a famous film location, where movies like 'The Gladiator' with Russel Crowe were shot), Pienza can pride with a great view from its 'gigantic balcony-promenade' on top of the city walls, adjacent to the Duomo Cathedral.  Here, one can enjoy a nice walk or a glass of wine, while breathing in the sunset, over the magnificent Tuscan hills.

The narrow stone streets with names like 'Via dell'Amore' ('Street of Love'), defined by two-three-store stone buildings on either sides, run through the city, into the Piazza Duomo situated between the 'gigantic balcony' on one side and the antique Francescan Monastery (today turned into a hotel) with a simple style Church (hidding a tiny player chapel with an altar for Madonna, that is a must to visit) build in XIV century by the monacs, on the other side!  The Piazza Duomo hosts art by local contemporary artists, like a giant bronze horse by Piero Sbarluzzi, as well, as antique religious reliquias in the Museo Diocesano, a place to visit, if you are a fan of religious art, just like me!

The city has some great little restaurants, like re-known family run 'Latte di Luna' (very difficult to get reservations for, but they often can find you a table as a walk in), 'La Buca delle Fate' or 'Osteria Sette di Vino'!! The food is good everywhere in Tuscany, but in 'Latte di Luna' it's amazing, my boyfriend had the house's specialty, ‘maialino in latte’- a baby pig and I had the duck with olives, while for dessert we shared the trio of ‘semifreddi’ -yummmmmyyy!!  If you are ever in Pienza, go to eat at the ‘LATTE DI LUNA’ you will thank me later!

Travel Necessities:

Over the years of traveling what I know best is how to pack!
Most of the people find it stressful and often panic before traveling; they worry about forgetting something or everything and end up packing tons of extra stuff and leaving home what is really need!
So here is my list of travel essentials!

Travel Necessities

PACKING TIP: When luggage space is limited remember to maintain a colour scheme!! You do not have to pack everything black or grey, just choose 2-3 basic complimentary colours and stick to those (here, I chose primary colours like ocra, blue turquise and magenta, plus I left the patterns for accessories like suglasses and shoes)!!

1.       TRACK SUIT (TUTA): always bring one, as it can be a life saver, wheather you will decide to work out or chill around! I learned to never travel without my www.juicycouture.com suits!

2.       FLIP FLOPS (INFRADITO):  useful as slippers in the hotel, shower, spa, sauna or beach! (Models never travel without a pair! Gisele even designed a line of her own www.ipanemausa.com)!
Utilissimi come ciabattine in albergo, doccia, spa, sauna o spiaggia!

3.       BATHING SUIT (COSTUME DA BAGNO): it barely takes up any space and on any trip there could be a pool, a garden or even a spa.  The last thing you want to do is give up on your fun or have to go looking for one during the trip!

4.       SUNGLASSES (OCCHIALI DA SOLE): always, always protect your eyes (believe me damaged eyes aren't pretty), plus this cool accessory adds a touch of mistery and fun!!

5.       SUNBLOCK (PROTEZIONE SOLARE): sun protection is super important!  Getting burned is not fun (remember that year when you came back from a trip with a peeled off nose and couldn't sit from a burned bum - I know, I do), plus premature aging is not flattering and SKIN CANCER is NOT A JOKE!

6.       HAT (CAPPELLO): a real life-saver from sun and wind, plus it adds a touch of style!

7.       PAIR OF JEANS (JEANS): a passe-par-touts, but opt for a simple non decor pair, that way you can get away wearing it on more occassions, just by changing the top!

8.       T-SHIRT (MAGLIETTA):  essential and light, always bring a couple of pieces.

9.       WALKING SHOES (SCARPE PER CAMMINARE): a pair in which you can really walk for kms (consider runners) useful both for city tours or nature walks!!

10.     LEGGINS:   you can wear these with a T-shirt, sweater or under a dress. They are a great substitute for pants and occupy practically, no space! I always pack a couple!

11.     SHORTS (PANTALONCINO): are great, fashionable and much more comfortable than a skirt!  Wear them alone on hot days or with tights/leggins under on chilly ones!!

12.   LONG SWEATER (MAGLIONE LUNGO): one to be worn over leggings and on top of dresses (consider a cardigan - fashionable and practical).

13.   DRESS (ABITO): always bring a couple that are pretty, comfortable and not too short!  Best are those versatile that can worn both during the day and in the evening.

14.   PRETTY SHOES+BAG (BORSETTA+SCARPE CARINE): a pair (possibly ballerinas), that are comfortable and pretty to wear day or evening, plus a purse (this set will be useful for most of the outings).

15.   SCARF (SCIARPA): a must have accessory for windy days and cooler evenings.

16.  JACKET (GIUBOTTO):  a wind-breaker for rainy days and/or a seasonal jacket.

17.   BATHROOM KIT (SET BAGNO):  washroom essentials in travel sizes (get yourself a set of little bottles under 100mL to fill in everythime you travel, I have a separate beauty with everything I need in mini size and it's super useful), a toothbrush, a hair brush, a small towel.

18.   PHARMACY KIT (SET MEDICINALI):   an aspirin, ibuprophen, anti-allergy, anti-diarrhea, band-aids, alcohol wipes and anything you might need in your trip.

19.   UNDERWEAR, SOCKS. PJs (MUTANDE, CALZINI, PIGIAMA): undies for each day of stay (got old ones, use them & throw away, without accumulating dirty laundry).

20.   CHARGERS (CARICA-BATTERIE):  phone, tablet, camera or whatever.
Cellulare, tablet, pc, fotocamera o qualsiasi altra cosa.

Once you got all this and still have lots of space in your luggage, then you can add some extras!!  However, remember to leave some space for shopping or presents in your bag ;))!!
